A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
