Astronaut Discloses Emotional Distress After ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured well-known figures.

The mission was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.

She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She added that despite the negativity, considerable good had emerged from the experience, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The fully automated spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the edge of space.

The diverse crew also comprised experts in various fields.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
