The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.
